On September 29, the Confucius Institute in Edmonton held its open house in celebration of the 5th Global Confucius Institute Day and 10th anniversary of the CIE.
Trustee Trisha Estabrooks, Dr. Lorne Parker, Assistant Superintendent of EPSB, and Mr. Stephen Tsang from ECBEA attended the event and also brought the greetings. Other special quests were Dr. Tian from Alberta Education, Principal Rick Gingras of Parkallen School and many teachers and leaders from the community. More than 500 people participated and enjoyed the wonderful performances including Chinese dances, Chinese musical instruments, Chinese rap song, martial arts and Chinese Yoyo.
The CIE also prepared a wide range of cultural activities, including taste of China, Chinese handcrafts, Chinese painting, calligraphy, Chinese games, photo booth, Chinese dance, acupressure workshop and message as well as Chinese calligraphy exhibition. Paper cutting was a very hot spot. Ms. Wang Hongmei, the expert of paper cutting, demonstrated her excellent talent and drew a big crowd.
The Chinese calligraphy exhibition displayed more than 30 art works by calligraphers Yuan Xulin and Yuan Jun. Calligrapher Yuan Jun is a well-known calligrapher in China and he is the vice-president of Calligraphy Association of Shanxi Province. His work has won many awards in China. Mr. Yuan showed his calligraphic skills at the event and wrote many verses for the audience.
