The 6th Alberta Chinese Bridge Competition for University Students

On March 11, the 6th Alberta Chinese Bridge Competition for University Students was successfully held at the Confucius Institute in Edmonton.

The Chinese Consulate General in Vancouver and the Confucius Institute in Edmonton were the organizers supported by Alberta universities including University of Alberta, the University of Calgary, MacEwan University, Concordia University of Edmonton, China Institute of the University of Alberta and NAIT. Sixteen students from different universities participated in the competition and many people attended the event to show their support including professors, students and parents. All competitors displayed excellent Chinese language competency and cultural talents such as singing, music instrument, Tai Chi sword, card trick, and Chinese handkerchief dance. Their wonderful performances impressed all the judges and audience so much.

Ms. Yvonne Chau, the director of Prairie’s Chapter of Canada China Business Council, was invited as a special guest to give a speech on “The Importance of Learning Chinese from Business Perspectives” during the award ceremony. Some other special guests brought greeting to congratulate the students for their excellent performances. They are Consul Xiao from Chinese Consulate in Vancouver; Dr. Daniel Fried, the vice chair of East Asia Studies of U of A, Dr. Manfred Zeuch, Vice president of Concordia University of Edmonton, Dr. William Wei, Vice Dean of Business School of MacEwan University and Ms. E-Mei Wang, Chinese Instructor of U of C.

Dr. Liang Tian gave a speech on behalf of all the judges to bring some highlights about the students’ performances. On behalf of the Confucius Institute in Edmonton, Dr. Wei Li expressed the deep appreciation to all the universities and people who put a lot of efforts to help organize this event.

It is hoped that all the participated students could all improve their Chinese language skills and Chinese culture knowledge through this process of preparing the competition. And also it will encourage more students to learn more Chinese language and culture and it will open many doors for their future.
