In April 2026, 1,999 students participated in Chinese proficiency examinations.
The students are enrolled in the Chinese Bilingual and Chinese Language/Culture programs at Edmonton public schools and Calgary public schools.
The testing session included several different exams:
- HSK Levels 1–6: Standardized written exams focusing on grammar, vocabulary, and reading comprehension for beginner to advanced learners.
- HSK Levels 7–9: The highest tier of proficiency, designed for students pursuing near-native fluency and specialized academic or professional applications.
- HSK Oral Test (HSKK): A dedicated evaluation of spoken Chinese, assessing pronunciation, fluency, and spontaneous communication.
- YCT (Youth Chinese Test): An international standardized test tailored specifically for primary and middle school students whose native language is not Chinese.
This high level of participation reflects the ongoing success of the Mandarin programs across the region.
