CIE Celebrates Lunar New Year with EPSB Teachers

On January 29th, the CIE hosted a Lunar New Year workshop for EPSB teachers. Held on a PD day at the Woodcroft Language Centre, the workshop provided a unique opportunity for educators to immerse themselves in the rich cultural traditions of this important celebration.

The workshop focused on two captivating art forms: calligraphy and dough art. Under the guidance of the CIE instructors, they practiced writing the Chinese character “福” (fú), meaning “good fortune” or “blessing,” in elegant calligraphy. This activity not only allowed them to experience the beauty of Chinese writing but also to understand the cultural significance of this auspicious character.

In addition to calligraphy, the teachers explored the fascinating world of dough art. They learned how to shape dough into their own miniature snakes to commemorate the Year of Snake. This hands-on activity provided a fun and creative way for the teachers to learn about the zodiac and the symbolism behind it.

The workshop was a resounding success, with teachers expressing their appreciation for the opportunity to learn about Chinese culture in such an interactive and meaningful way. They could incorporate these activities into their own classrooms to share the traditions of Lunar New Year with their students. The CIE’s efforts in organizing this workshop demonstrate their commitment to promoting cultural exchange and understanding within the Edmonton community.
